Oz Tour Diary
Melbourne: First gig. We arrived at 10.30h in the morning for sound check. Nice stage, 5000 cap tent. All our gear is on site (which makes us happy). Smooth soundcheck and as they say over here: “No worries” and we go chilling in the backstage where they are serving BBQ all afternoon. Welcome to Australia! We walk around the festival site and everywhere we look we see colorful kids, fluo, fluo, fluo… this will set the tone for the next shows! 4h50. Showtime. The tent is packed. Dave starts to modulate on his synth, Tom comes in, Bert starts to drum and then… all the monitor levels have changed! No worries?? I don’t think so. We start to communicate with the monitor engineer in order to get some balance, all that while we are playing. When we start the third song, the sound is about right and we are ready to rock. After the gig we retire to our backstage and evaluate the gig as a hard one, but all in all the kids seemed to have fun and didn’t notice our struggle on stage. So one down three to go. All vibed up, we are ready for our first Australian Tour. Sunday morning… oh… yesterday first Parklife afterparty. The tone is set; Jens and Izzi (Digitalism) will be our partners in crime for the rest of the week off in Sydney. On Monday Goose goes touristy. A walk in the botanic garden that leads us to the Opera House. Did you know the Opera House is in fact more than one building? Yeah, they are made of 3 separate venues…. But you can’t notice that from a distance or on a postcard ;) I can quote the rest of week with a song from the movie “Hey DJ” “Monday night: To the club, Tuesday night: to the club, Wednesday night: to the club, Thursday night we don’t feel like dancing but we go to the club, Friday night: we have a hangover, but our friend called us, so we went to the club” If you get a chance, check the movie. All of you djs out there you will laugh your heads off. It’s about a DJ who used to run a successful recordshop, and as the years pass by he his not the coolest guy in town anymore. So now he spends he days drinking, getting high and repairing turntables for all the big DJs. Special appearances by Carl Cox, Junior Jack, Bob Sinclar… and many others. So yeah in the end he tries to become the next big DJ using Elvis samples…. Ladies and gentlemen we present you DJ Hounddog. But of course it’s not all about having fun! What do you think? You think we are on holiday? On Wednesday we spend the whole day at the Sony office doing interviews with journalists from Brisbane, Perth and Sydney. We did a 20min DJ set for the very cute Linda from Triple J Radio and did an interview for 2SER radio. And on Thursday afternoon Goose went educational: we went to the zoo and got a private tour: stroking koala’s, emu’s, kangaroo’s. Bert even holds a Python snake around his neck! Dare devil! Oh right I almost forgot: We are officially Bondi Beach Surfers, baby! Tony (our bookers assistant) arranged a surf lesson for us and I have to say it was one of the best experiences we had since we got to Australia! Just you, your hangover and the waves. Haha. The most amazing feeling and it was such a gorgeous day, as the Aussi’s would say. Because it is still spring here and it is only since we arrived in Sydney that the weather got better, it’s getting a very hot summer, so everybody is really excited about that. A lot of students just graduated, so there is a happy happy vibe in the air and on the beach. Friday afternoon we jump on the plane to Brisbane. In the evening we have dinner with our booker Simon, our French booker Max who’s here with Justice, Jurgen a journalist who’s doing a piece about Goose on tour (from now on we will have to be careful of what we say and do, because he’s gonna spend the rest of the week with us… damn spy. No, not true, we know him for quite a while now and it is always nice to read how hard bands work!) But we all are very tired so we have dinner and a few drinks in a pub and head for the hotel to have an early night because tomorrow is showtime! I have to admit we are very happy that there is an other Parklife gig, because when you spend a week off in a great city as Sydney you kind of forget why you came here in the first place. So Brisbane let’s dance shall we? Brisbane show. 10.30h on site and what a soundcheck! But hey, no worries right? So the stagemanager gave us another 20min to work on the sound. In the end everything was all cool. The stage was put at the foot of a hill so the view you had from the stage was really amazing. When the sun went down, fluo shirt made way for the glowsticks. What a view? Are we really back in the 80’s? After our set MSTRKRFT was on, and what can I say, I think it was the best set they have played since we started to tour together. After JFK and Al P have finished we are off to the Airport to catch a plain for Sydney. Our sound engineer Frank stays one more night in Brisbane, because Justice have asked him to do their sound as well. So from now on Frank is on double shifts, lucky man ;) Sydney. Being back in Sydney really feel like we are back home in a certain way. Because we spent the first 6 days there we got the change to meet a lot of cool people so it was nice to hang out with them again. But Sydney was not all about fun… The Sydney show was about to be the most important show for Goose in Australia. Home of our record label and where all the media is based. But hey! It’s only Rock’n roll right? So we go on stage and later on it seems that Sydney was the best show we did on the Parklife edition. The crowd was big, singing along and all our friends where there to support us. And then? The After Party. After the headliners Justice finished their set we all drove to a big concert hall. 5000 raving kids waiting for DJ sets from Digitalism, Sounds, Mstrkrft, Busy P, Justice and Goose. I think if that night they would have bombed the venue the contemporary dance scene would be dead. Haha! It’s not a nice thing to say for the people who buy tickets, but the best parties always happen on stage and around the DJ booth. Oh man what a night, and what a morning after… Monday morning. Somebody from the hotel slips a note under the door saying: “Wake up call 8.30h” Luckily we were ready to go and didn’t miss our flight! After a 5h flight we arrived in Perth, where a little bus was waiting for us to take us to the hotel. What we didn’t know was that we got to share the bus with M.I.A. which made Bert a very happy man! After a short stop at the hotel another bus took us to the festival. You could see the look in everybody’s eyes when they arrived in the backstage: “Did I speak to you yesterday? Was I ok? Man, you look…uhm, tired”. Since it was the last show on the Parklife tour there was a very relaxed atmosphere. Tired or not, we went on stage and I think we all put all the energy we had left in us, in the show. Once we got back in our very windy and freezing tent we had a small backstage drink and checked out bands we didn’t had the chance to see yet. So we got to see bits of Yelle, Sounds and M.I.A. After M.I.A. had finished Parklife was officially over! We had done it! everything on our list of thing to do when in Australia was ticked: we surfed, we’ve been touristy, we did 4 shows, 1 DJ set, met a lot of cool people and of course, no tour ends without shopping. Did I forget to mention something? Maybe… So, shivering and on the edge of catching a cold we got back to the hotel again. Bert and I decided to stay in the hotel, which seemed like the worst and the best idea at the same time. Parklife had organized an afterparty for all the artists, so you would think “Must go there!” But in the end the guys reassure us and said we didn’t miss much. They had a little hotel room gathering instead of going wild. Good choice, because next day we would travel for 28h to get back home. Tuesday. Time to go home: woke up, dinner with Simon who started out as our promotor for Australia, but became a really good friend, oh yeah our journalist was still around and well, but he would leave on Wednesday.
